Residence - Bungalow 55A, Fourth Beach, Clifton, Cape Town
2001
The site is extremely steep, falling sharply away from and below the scenic Victoria Road which runs along the exclusive Atlantic Seaboard of Cape Town.
In order to accommodate the planning restrictions, further excavation was required in order to lower the apex of the roof to a level below the back of footway level.
The aspect of the site is due west, capturing the view of Clifton 4th Beach and the expanse of the Atlantic beyond.
A base platform, with a significant retaining wall, was established to recreate the site upon which the house is constructed.
Tilting structural columns, resembling open sun umbrellas, support the roof over the double storey structure. The roof is separated from the enclosure by means of frameless clerestory and gable glazing, which allows for views back up to Lions Head.
The harsh west sun is controlled by the use of shutters, which are positioned at the outer edge of the west facing terrace, in order to mitigate against the build up of heat in the late afternoons.
