Residence in Worcester, Western Cape
2010
Dream House is situated in the middle of the fertile Breede River Valley, north of Worcester, and the house itself is placed directly within the vineyards.
The micro climate of the valley is harsh with hot summers, cold winters and powerful winds.
The ‘Courtyard House’, as a type, was proposed to provide shelter from the elements and private space within the expanse of the surrounding valley and vineyards. A large, deep and sheltered veranda faces north and allows for the long views to the distant and surrounding mountains.
Dream House is a one storey structure. The ceiling void, based on traditional models of rural construction in the area, is deep and ventilated and mitigates against heat gain and loss.
The enclosing exterior walls are plastered and painted white, terminating in a continuous parapet line. The form of the building is therefore unambiguously juxtaposed against the surrounding environment.
Openings in the external walls are limited and protected by sliding shutters.
