Residence - Molteno Road, Oranjezicht, Cape Town
1994
The house is situated on a small 500m², very narrow, steeply sloping and west facing street corner site. The site provided views of Table Mountain, the city and Table Bay.
The budget was very limited, yet the house needed to accommodate a family of four, guest quarters and a double garage.
The ground floor consists of two layers of space - served and serving - these being the entrance hall, dining/living rooms and the kitchen, study and vertical circulation respectively.
Due to limited space, the ground floor enclosure consists primarily of floor to ceiling height glazing, with full height sliding doors, extending the parameters of the space to the outer boundary wall of the site and thus including the garden in the experience of the internal space.
The bedrooms and bathrooms are upstairs, replicating the bands of served and serving spaces set out at the ground floor below. The west facing bedroom windows are screened by ordinary cement breeze block infill panels within an external cantilevered concrete frame.
